More of your customers are starting their search inside an AI assistant. They ask ChatGPT “who’s the best HVAC company near me,” or they read Google’s AI Overview before they ever scroll to a single website. If your business isn’t named in those answers, you’re invisible to a fast-growing slice of high-intent buyers.
The good news: getting cited by AI is winnable, and most of your local competitors aren’t doing it yet. Here is what actually moves the needle.
1. AI engines quote sources they can trust and parse
Answer engines pull from pages that are clearly structured, factually consistent, and corroborated across the web. That means three things for a home-service site:
- Clear, answer-shaped content. Pages that directly answer the questions buyers ask (“how much does a new AC unit cost in Dallas?”) get pulled into AI answers far more often than vague service pages.
- Structured data. LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ and Review schema tell the machine exactly who you are, what you do, and where.
- Consistency. Your name, address, phone and service area must match everywhere, site, Google Business Profile, directories. Conflicting data gets you skipped.
2. Entity signals beat keyword stuffing
AI models think in entities, real things and the relationships between them, not keyword density. They want to understand that “Acme Plumbing” is a licensed plumber, in a specific city, with real reviews, that does specific jobs. Build that picture: a strong About page, named team, licenses and certifications, a real service-area page, and reviews that mention specific services.
3. Reviews and third-party mentions are the tiebreaker
When two companies are equally relevant, AI engines lean on reputation. Volume and recency of Google reviews, plus mentions on local sites and directories, are some of the strongest signals you can build. A steady drip of fresh, detailed reviews does double duty: it converts humans and it feeds the machine.
Rank on Google and get named by the AI, the two now feed each other.
4. Don’t abandon classic SEO
AI Overviews are built on top of the same index that powers traditional search. Fast, well-structured, authoritative pages still win. The work you do for AI visibility, schema, clear answers, reviews, technical health, is the same work that lifts your blue-link rankings. You’re not choosing between them; you’re building one foundation that serves both.
The short version
Structure your content to answer real questions, mark it up with schema, keep your business data consistent everywhere, and build a steady stream of reviews. Do that and you become the company the AI recommends, while your competitors are still arguing about meta tags.
