Why “More Impressions” Is Not a Result

Open most agency reports and you’ll see a wall of impressions, reach, clicks and “engagement.” None of it pays for a truck, a crew, or payroll. Home-service businesses run on one number: jobs on the schedule. Everything else is a means to that end, or a distraction from it.

The metrics that actually matter

  • Cost per lead (CPL). What does it cost to get one real phone call or form fill?
  • Lead-to-booked rate. How many of those leads turn into scheduled jobs?
  • Cost per booked job. CPL divided by your booking rate, the number that tells you if a channel is profitable.
  • Return on ad spend (ROAS). Revenue produced for every dollar spent, tied back to closed work.

If your reporting can’t connect a dollar of spend to a booked, profitable job, it isn’t reporting, it’s decoration.

Why agencies hide behind vanity metrics

Impressions always go up. They’re easy to grow and impossible to be held accountable to. Booked revenue is harder, it requires conversion tracking wired into your CRM, honest attribution, and a willingness to kill campaigns that don’t pay. That’s exactly why it’s the only thing worth measuring.

Ten questions to ask your current ad agency this week

  1. What is my cost per booked job, by channel?
  2. Which campaigns are actually profitable right now?
  3. Are leads tracked into my CRM, or just counted as clicks?
  4. What’s my lead-to-booked rate, and is it improving?
  5. How much of my budget went to brand searches I’d have won anyway?
  6. What did you turn off last month, and why?
  7. Are we bidding on the services with the best margins?
  8. How fast are leads being followed up on?
  9. What’s our share of Local Service Ads in our top zip codes?
  10. If I gave you 20% more budget, what would it produce, in jobs?

If the answers are vague, you’re paying for reporting, not results. The fix is simple: tie every campaign back to revenue, and optimize against that number only.
